A-Level Product Design

Product Design enables you to design and make creative products to solve real life problems and fulfil design needs. You will study historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on Design and Technology and put your learning into practice by designing and making products.

Year 12 builds up your knowledge and understanding of materials, components and their application, as well as providing an opportunity to design and make a product of your own.

In Year 13 you will learn about the design industry, the market influences that designers must consider and the industrial processes involved. Again there is a major design and make coursework project.  

Through this you will develop an understanding of what it is like to be a designer and will develop skills useful for employment and higher education.

Assessment

50% examination / 50% coursework

Requirements

General college entry requirements plus a grade 5 or above GCSE Product Design.

Where can it lead?

The course is both creative and technical and prepares you effectively for careers in product design, graphic design, interior design, architecture, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, joinery/cabinet making, manufacturing, CAD draughtsman etc.
